The Malankara Mar Thoma Sabha Development Department was reorganized as an official organization of the Church from the Development Department, a society of the Church established in 1977, which focused on developmental activities for the underprivileged in society.

Holistic development is a primary part of the mission of the Church and the Kingdom of God. This is fulfilled through showing empathy and care for the poor and marginalized, protecting the rights of those who are denied justice, and ensuring the experience of “abundant life” for all. Doing so will result in the Church becoming a sacramental presence of the Kingdom of God.

The Prathinidhi Mandalam of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church that met on 13, 14, and 15 September 2022 recognized the Malankara Mar Thoma Sabha Development Department as an official organization of the Church.
